Court gives green light for farm with one million chickens

A court in Roermond has thrown out objections from protestors worried about plans to build a massive factory farm housing one million chickens and 35,000 pigs near their homes.

The mega project will be built near the village of Grubbenvorst in Limburg. The court ruled on Wednesday the local council was correct in approving planning permission, the Volkskrant reports.

Protestors say the giant farm will be 10 times the size of other big factory farms and they are worried about the smell and impact on their living situation.

The court said most of the 43 protestors are too far away from the site to be able to stake a claim. In addition, the state-of-the art farm will not smell as much as the existing one.

The project, which will also include an on-site slaughterhouse, still needs an environmental permit for building to go ahead.
