Bankrupt Polare book shops begin reopening

The Polare book shop in Rotterdam is to reopen at a new location on the Coolsingel under its original name of Donner.

The Polare book shop chain was declared bankrupt at the end of February. Since then, the Eindhoven store has been taken over by branch manager Paul van Orsouw and entrepreneur Arjan de Koning who are reopening it under its original name of Van Piere.

Rotterdam is the second store to get a reopening. It was sold in a management buy-out following a crowdfunding action by five staff members which has already brought in €135,000 towards the €250,000 cost of the reopening.

There are also action plans in place for the stores in Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Nijmegen and Maastricht, each of which wants to reopen under its original name.

The Polare group included some of the Netherlands most famous book shops, including Scheltema in Amsterdam and Dominicanen in Maastricht which is located in an old Dominican church.
