ING customers will have to track down overpayments themselves

ING customers who found themselves paying bills more than once because of Tuesday’s system breakdown will have to recover the money themselves, the Telegraaf says on Wednesday.

Despite the breakdown, which lasted much of the day, people with mobile ING accounts were still able to make payments. After trying once, they were given the prompt ‘try again’ – leading dozens of people to do just that, and pay their bills a second time.

Recovering the wrongly paid cash is ‘the responsibility of the user, and this includes during breakdowns,’ spokesman Jeroen Baardemans told the Telegraaf. ‘If you have lost money, you have to contact the payee. We cannot decide if a customer has done this by mistake or deliberately.’

ING’s online banking system has been disrupted three times this month.
