Gold medal for Dutch men in team pursuit speed skating

Sven Kramer, Jan Blokhuijsen and Koen Verweij won the final gold medal of the long track speed skating at the Winter Olympics on Saturday, setting a new Olympic record of 3 minutes 37.71 for the team pursuit.

Korea came in almost three seconds slower to take silver.

Unlike the other long track events, the team pursuit consists of heats building up to a final between the two fastest teams.

It is the first time the Dutch men have won gold in the event, which made its debut at the Winter Olympics in 2006.

The Dutch women’s team is also in the final which takes place later on Saturday afternoon.

Saturday’s team pursuit victory means the Dutch men long track skaters have won five out of six gold medals – failing only to take the 1,500m, and that by just 0.003 of a second.

In total, the Dutch men have won 13 out of 18 long track speed skating medals, including three clean sweeps.
