Russian diplomat, at centre of arrest row, leaves the Netherlands
The Russian diplomat who was arrested at his home in The Hague last month after neighbours claimed he was abusing his children has left the Netherlands, the NRC said on Sunday evening.
Dmitri Borodin, the number two at the Russian embassy in The Hague, used the microblogging service Twitter to say his departure ‘is not entirely my choice’, the paper said, quoting news agency Novum.
Borodin’s arrest led to a diplomatic row between the Netherlands and Russia ahead of a visit by king Willem-Alexander. Dutch foreign minister Frans Timmermans was forced to apologise for the arrest, which took place despite Borodin’s diplomatic immunity.
Borodin said in his messages he does not dislike the Dutch and is leaving many friends behind.
Several days after Borodin’s arrest, the number two at the Dutch embassy in Moscow was beaten up by two men at his home.
