European football 2020: Amsterdam is a candidate city

Amsterdam is a candidate to host four matches in the 2020 European football championships, the Dutch football association KNVB has said.

The 2020 championship will be played across 13 countries and the Netherlands hopes to stage three group and one round of 16 matches.

Twelve cities will stage the group and round of 16 games while one host city will present the semi-finals and final.

To qualify for the final rounds, a city must have a stadium with a capacity of at least 60,000. The cancellation of plans to build a replacement stadium for the Kuip in Rotterdam means Amsterdam’s Arena is the country’s biggest. But it only has maximum capacity of 53,000.

The football association has also agreed to try to win hosting rights for the 2017 women’s European championship.
