Children's ombudsman looks into social media abuse, privacy

Monday 02 December 2013

The children’s ombudsman Marc Dullaert has started an inquiry into the ways childrens’ right to privacy is being infringed on social media networks.

In particular, Dullaert says he is concerned at the way photographs and personal information is being abused on channels like Facebook and Twitter.

The ombudsman's concern stems from the case of a 13-year-old boy whose photograph has been used for dozens of fake websites and abusive messages within the Netherlands and abroad.

The boy’s parents have tried to get Facebook and Google to cooperate in removing the websites and photographs but to little avail, the Volkskrant reported on Monday
