17-year-old debutant propels Ajax to Eredivisie leadership

Two goals by 17-year-old Jairo Riedewald, who was making his debut for the club, put Ajax at the top of the Eredivisie ahead of the winter break.

Ajax was 1-0 down to Roda JC when Riedewald, a defender, was brought on as a substitute in the 80th minute. Riedewald equalised in the 88th minute and scored again in extra time.

The win put Ajax above Vitesse of Arnhem on goal difference. Vitesse drew 2-2 against Heracles on Saturday.

The last time Ajax finished the first half of the season in the lead was in 2003.

On other football action, PSV Eindhoven dispelled some of their season’s gloom with a 2-0 win over ADO Den Haag.
