Youth in Leiden school shooting threat faces community service

The youth who sparked a manhunt after threatening to shoot his teacher and pupils at a school in Leiden earlier this year, should get a one-month suspended jail term, the public prosecution department said on Tuesday.

Janoek V, who is 19, should also be sentenced to 150 hours community service for making the threats, which led to schools in Leiden being shut and extra security measures.

V was in Costa Rica when he made the threats via internet. They were eventually traced to an internet cafe. There is no extradition treaty between the two countries and V returned to the Netherlands voluntarily to face the music.

Last week, it emerged Dutch police look into 200 threatening social media messages every day.
