Traffic jams increase, road widening creates new bottlenecks

The number of traffic jams on Dutch roads increased by 10% in October, according to the traffic information service VID.

Weather conditions and the number of working days can have an effect on traffic jams, but these did not differ greatly this October compared with October 2012. There was one extra working day in the month but the amount of rainfall was roughly the same, says the VID.

Most of the reduction in traffic jams over the past year came from the widening of motorways, the organisation says. But new bottlenecks have been created.
