Some traffic offences are set to become crimes

Some traffic offences should fall under the criminal justice system so that repeat offenders can face tougher punishment, says justice minister Ivo Opstelten.

The minister says punishment for these type of offences can only be increased to include heavier fines, driving bans and even prison if they fall under criminal law.

The ruling VVD and PvdA had asked the minister to look at ways of cracking down on anti-social road users.

Opstelten told parliament he and the public prosecution department are now looking at which traffic offences should fall under the tougher regime.
