MPs are likely to vote in favour of a motion to increase the income limit for social housing to €38,000 a year, according to media reports on Tuesday.

At the moment, only households with an income of below €34,000 are entitled to live in rent controlled property – which means the rent cannot exceed €681 a month.

The Labour party plan would also see 20% of social housing set aside for people earning between €34,000 and €38,000 a year. The party also wants housing minister Stef Blok to raise the issue in Brussels. The income limits stem from European Commission rules.

The Labour party’s coalition partner VVD and the D66 Liberals oppose the idea. Blok says it will increase waiting lists for people on the lowest incomes.
