Protestors who threw tomato at king face two weeks in jail

Two Russians who threw a tomato at king Willem-Alexander and queen Máxima during their visit to Moscow will spend up to two weeks in jail, news agency Novum quoted Russian agency Interfax as saying.

The two will face charges of vandalism which carries a maximum of 15 days in jail, sources within the justice ministry told Interfax.

The two men threw the tomato and screamed at the royal couple, accusing them of having blood on their hands, witnesses said.

They were referring to the suicide of Russian activist and asylum seeker Aleksandr Domatov in a Dutch jail earlier this year.

The couple, who were on their way to attend a concert by the Concertgebouw orchestra, were not hit by the tomatoes. The visit to Moscow was to end a year-long celebration marking 400 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Earlier, Willem-Alexander told a meeting of Dutch and Russian businessmen he hoped for an expansion of trade with Russia.
