Police pay funeral of youth shot dead at a train station last year

The police paid for the funeral of a 17-year-old youth shot dead on a railway station platform last year, the AD reports on Friday.

The payment was a ‘highly unusual gesture,’ sociologist Jaap Timmer, an expert on the Dutch police, told the AD.

Rishi Chandrikasing was shot by police at Hollands Spoor station in the early hours of November 24. Police had been told that an armed man was threatening passengers. The youth was unarmed and the police officer who shot him in the neck is facing criminal charges. The case is due to come to court shortly.

A police spokesman told the paper the decision to pay for the funeral had been taken because the youth’s death was a tragedy for the family and because there was no question of an emergency situation when the shooting happened.

Timmer said he only knew of two other cases in which the police paid for the funeral.
