First proper frost hits, and there is sleet to come this afternoon

The temperature fell to as low as -5.5 Celsius in parts of the country overnight and roads north of Nijmegen are likely to be slippery in many places.

Council gritting trucks were out in force to try to stop ice forming on the roads. Only coastal areas remained above zero, Nos television said.

The KNMI weather bureau is predicting sleet later on Wednesday. However,  on Thursday it will be dry and cold with sunny spells, the KNMI said.
