The Telegraaf Media Group is to stop running its Hyves social network site on December 2 to focus fully on its gaming network, the company said in a press release on Thursday.
TMG bought Hyves – once seen as the Dutch Facebook – in 2010 for €44m. Since then, Hyves users have stepped over en masse to its international competitor.
Launched in 2004, by 2010, some 60% of the Dutch had a Hyves account. But by 2012 this had plunged to 25%, RTL news reported.
At the beginning of 2013, a games portal was established under the Hyves label. Now 25 different developers have contracts with the site which currently offers 400 games, TMG said.
