The economy overtakes crime, public safety as number one concern

The economy has overtaken social issues such as crime, public safety and integration as the biggest public concern in the latest population monitor from the government’s social and cultural think-tank SCP.

It is the first time since the start of the financial crisis in 2008 that the economy and income have topped the list.

Almost one in five told SCP researchers the economy was their biggest concern, while 16% opted for social contact and manners. Lower and middle income households are most likely to be concerned about the economy.

Some 12% cited confidence in the government and politicians as the biggest issue while 10% said they were most concerned about healthcare and the elderly.

The SCP carries out its monitor four times a year.

Some 55% of those questioned expect the economy to deteriorate further and 29% expect their own financial situation to get worse. Nevertheless, four out of five people still say their personal financial position is satisfactory, the report showed.
