Track operator ProRail is scrapping the use of the Nato phonetic alphabet for communications between train drivers and track supervisors, the Volkskrant reports on Tuesday.

The move comes after discussions between ProRail supervisors, train operator NS drivers, unions and management.

The Nato alphabet meant workers were no longer allowed to say ‘platform 14B’ but must spell it out as ‘platform one four bravo’.

In early August, supervisors sent a letter to ProRail management saying the new system was leading to pronounciation mistakes, unnecessarily long conversations, confusion and unsafe situations.

ProRail and NS said at the time the new communications system made the railways safer. They have now revised their opinion.
