Former PVV politician Hero Brinkman rejoins the police

Hero Brinkman, a former parliamentarian for the anti-immigration PVV, has rejoined Amsterdam’s police force, news agency ANP said on Monday.

Brinkman has made use of the right of civil servants to return to their former jobs once they leave politics. The police have not said what Brinkman’s role will be and he has not commented either, ANP said.

Brinkman, 48, became an MP in 2006 but left the party in March 2012, saying he was frustrated at the party’s lack of democracy. He set up his own party but failed to win any seats at the September 2012 general election.

Brinkman also hit the headlines in 2010 after it emerged he had driven away from a police alcohol check at high speed while a serving police officer in 2001.

In 2009, he was involved in a brawl at the parliamentary press centre and later forced to admit to having an alcohol problem.

Brinkman spent 14 years with the Amsterdam police force, including five years as an inspector.
