Football clubs will not have to pay policing costs outside their stadiums, according to the justice ministry’s 2014 spending plans.

The decision reverses legislation passed in 2013 which has not yet been implemented, the NRC reports. The paper says the u-turn has come because implementing the plan will cost more than it generates.

The ministry’s budget states that policing outside the stadium is the responsibility of the government and cannot therefore be passed on to the clubs.

The Dutch football association KNVB welcomed the decision, saying it would have cost the clubs €30m a year.
