Dutch father and son set beach soccer record

Roel and Diego Liefden from the Netherlands have made international beach football history by becoming the first father and son to be members of the same team.

Roel, 46, and son Diego, 23, from Rotterdam, are both part of the Dutch team taking part in the beach soccer World Cup in Tahiti. Roel is also the tournament’s oldest player.

‘I didn’t imagine one day to play with my dad in the national team and even less to be with him for a World Cup and it’s pretty special,’ Diego told Fifa.com.

The Netherlands are taking part in the tournament for the first time and are bottom of their group after losing to the Solomon Islands and El Salvador.
