CCTV images again lead to speedy arrest

Security camera images have again led to the speedy arrest of a suspect in an attack in a public place.

The attack took place on Sunday evening in a cafe in Den Bosch, when a 28-year-old man was stabbed and taken to intensive care. The attacker ran from the building but was caught on CCTV cameras.

After consultation with the public prosecution department, local police released the images on Monday evening to regional tv programme Bureau Brabant. The attacker was arrested on Tuesday, Nos tv reports.

Criticism

The broadcasting of CCTV images to trace suspects was criticised in August by a judge hearing the case against four teenagers for an attack in Eindhoven.

Three of the teenagers were found guilty of attempted manslaughter but were given lower sentences than demanded because of the television broadcasts.

The judge in the case said releasing the footage to the media had a serious impact on the defendents and the prosecutor should have realised the film would be endlessly circulated on the internet.
