Campaign launched against smart phone use while driving

The transport ministry on Monday launched a campaign to discourage people from using their smart phones while driving, in an effort to prevent dozens of deaths a year.

According to the road safety research institute, up to 100 people are dying on an annual basis because of traffic accidents caused by people texting and checking their emails.

According to the TNO institute, a driver glancing at their smart phone for three seconds on a motorway will have covered the length of a football pitch without looking at the road.

The campaign will run throughout the autumn. Police will also be on the look out for smart phone users, Nos television said. It is illegal to hold a smart phone while driving.
