AZ Alkmaar manager in shock departure

AZ Alkmaar on Sunday confirmed the sacking of manager Gertjan Verbeek with ‘immediate effect’, one day after his team scored a 2-1 victory over PSV Eindhoven.

In a statement on its website, the club said a ‘lack of chemistry between the coach and his team’ caused his sudden exit.

Saturday’s win took AZ to fourth place in the premier league and the team is contesting the group stages of the Europa League. They play Greek team PAOK on Thursday.

The 51-year-old Verbeek joined AZ in 2010 and signed a contract extension to 2015 just last summer.

A replacement has not been announced, but a press conference on Monday afternoon is expected to throw more light on the situation.
