Just one in six voters support the government’s plans to embark on a new round of austerity measures designed to raise €6bn, and 45% would like there to be a general election, according to new research from opinion pollster Maurice de Hond.

Nearly three-quarters think the Dutch economy is performing badly because of government policies. Even 55% of people who voted for the ruling VVD Liberals at the last election back the statement, the poll shows. Seven out of 10 Labour voters also agree.

Support for the coalition has crumbled since the general election a year ago, the De Hond poll shows. The VVD, which won 41 of the 150 seats in parliament, is now on 21. De Hond says Labour, which won 38, would win just 13 if there was a general election tomorrow.
