Number of suicides increases

The number of people committing suicide has increased for the fifth year in a row, figures from the central statistics agency CBS show.

In 2012, 1,753 people took their own life, an increase of 6% on 2011 and the fifth increase in a row.

According to the CBS, men and unmarried people are most likely to commit suicide. The increase in numbers is greatest among the 30 to 70-year-olds.

Psychological problems are the main reason for ending your life. This applied to 872 cases last year. But there were 504 suicides where no reason was apparent, the CBS says.
