Bus and tram travel is much more expensive

Travelling by tram and bus has become much more expensive since the introduction of the ov-chipkaart, passengers’ website treinreiziger.nl said on Tuesday.

In The Hague, the price per kilometre has risen 47% over two years, in Amsterdam by 38% and in the rest of Noord-Holland by 27%.

The travel smart card is in use nationally on trams and buses and since 2011 fares have been decided locally. This has led to some strange variations, treinreiziger said.

Strange

One of the strangest is the route between Nijmegen and Uden which is served by two bus companies and where a journey can cost either €4.92 or €5.07. There are two bus companies on the one route because Nijmegen and Uden fall under different regions.

In virtually every region of the Netherlands the kilometre price has increased by an average 8%.

On top of the kilometre price, passengers also have to pay a basic fare which is the same throughout the country. This has increased by nearly 9% since 2011.
