Weather forecasters are warning the temperature could reach up to 34 Celsius inland as the tropical heatwave continues.

The KNMI has issued a code yellow weather warning for the whole country and the public health institute RIVM has warned the elderly and infirm in particular to drink plenty of water and not to over-exert themselves.

The high temperatures are expected to continue until Wednesday when the temperature will drop several degrees and rain or thunderstorms are likely.

There were long traffic jams on roads to the more popular beaches on Sunday and the rescue services were called out several times to look for missing swimmers and children. All were found safely.
