Mystery animal was a wolf, DNA tests show

The dead animal found on a roadside near Luttelgeest at the beginning of this month was a wolf, DNA checks have shown, according to researchers at the natural history museum Naturalis in Leiden.

Its experts had already said they were 98% certain the animal was a wolf.

Further DNA checks in Germany should reveal where the wolf originated. There are some 20 packs known in Germany.

Some people have suggested the wolf was dumped in the Netherlands as a joke. The last confirmed sighting of a wolf in the Netherlands was 150 years ago.
