The Netherlands’ biggest teaching hospital, Erasmus University’s EMC, is in administrative chaos because of IT failures, the Financieele Dagblad reports on Friday.

The paper says the IT problems mean the hospital does not know how many people it employs, what they earn, how much money is coming in and if bills are being paid correctly.

The problems began in 2010 when the hospital began working on a new computer system and have still not been solved. This has also hit the university’s €1.2bn expansion plans which are now over budget by as much as 50% in some areas, the paper says.

Bloody limit

The FD bases its claims on confidential documents.

One email from executive Anton Westerlaken sent from his holiday address in November 2011 states: ‘This is the bloody limit. Our wonderful administration system means almost everything has to be done again. It is a wonder anyone still wants to work here.’

In a reaction to the paper’s story, the EMC says it now has the situation under control and has taken ‘several far-reaching measures’ and renegotiated the building contract. IT supplier Ordina said: ‘We are not responsible for the implementation.’
