Dutch economist, women’s rights activist arrested for stalking
Dutch economist Heleen Mees has been arrested for stalking chief Citigroup economist and academic Willem Buiter, according to US media reports.
The paper said Mees, a former New York University professor and strong supporter of female empowerment, sent Buiter ‘thousands of emails over a two-year period’. Some were highly sexual while others included threats.
Mees, who writes columns for the Financieele Dagblad and the NRC, was arrested on Monday and appeared in court on Tuesday, the paper said.
Her lawyer, Vaneshka Hyacinthe, told the court Mees had ‘a long-standing relationship’ with fellow Dutch national Buiter and ‘the emails go in both directions’. Mees has lived in New York since 2000.
