Millions of euros donated by the Netherlands to rebuild the Bosnian town of Srebrenica have not reached their targets because of corruption, the local mayor told a Dutch current affairs show on Sunday evening.

The Netherlands has donated some €120m since 1995 to rebuild the town. The aid is compensation for the massacre of up to 8,000 men and boys in the town in July 1995 during the Yugoslavian civil war.

The town was under the protection of Dutch soldiers working for the UN when it was overrun by Bosnian Serbs.

Mayor Camil Durakovic says little of the money has gone on rebuilding homes and other property and the Netherlands has effectively been writing blank cheques.
