10,000 chickens die in poultry farm fire

At least 10,000 chickens were killed in a fire at a battery chicken farm in Limburg at the weekend.

Fire swept through the shed around midnight, but fire officers were able to prevent it spreading to two other sheds, news agency ANP said.

Fires at Dutch poultry farms are not uncommon. In November last year, nearly 50,000 chickens were killed in a fire near Utrecht and in July 2011, 170,000 died in a similar fire in Drenthe.
