Sales of cars and motorbikes fell by 17% in the first three months of this year and a further decline is expected in the second quarter, according to new figures from national statistics office CBS.

The first quarter plunge is the biggest recorded since 2009, the CBS said. Sales are down across the entire sector but importers of new cars have been hit hardest, with turnover down by almost a quarter.
