Benefit centre expects job seeker numbers to rise by 170,000

The state-run job centre UWV expects the number of people registered as official job seekers to rise a further 6% next year, on top of a 22% increase in 2013.

In total, some 739,000 people will be looking for work by the end of 2014, the UWV said.

Even though the economy is forecast to pick up in 2014, this will not translate immediately into jobs, the UWV said.

At the same time, the number of jobs in the Netherlands will go down by 110,000 this year and next, with most of the jobs disappearing this year.
