Amstelveen shopping centre expansion on ice

Dutch-French developer Unibail-Rodamco has dropped plans to enlarge and renovate Amstelveen’s Stadshart shopping centre after the city council suddenly withdrew its support for the project.

The €200m plans, which had the support of the council’s executive, were presented to the public less than a week ago, but led to enormous unease after it emerged 60 homes would have to be demolished.

Owners and tenants were informed by a council circular that their property was up for demolition.

The council said opposition to the redevelopment was so strong there is no point in pursuing the plan.
