200 jobs to go at Dutch secret service as government cuts continue

Some 200 out of 1,500 jobs are to disappear at the AIVD secret service over the next few years because of government cutbacks.

Home affairs minister Ronald Plasterk told parliament on Monday the AIVD will reduce its focus on left and right-wing extremism and animal rights activists. It will also cut back on its operations in foreign countries and its IT security advice to make up the shortfall.

In total, €70m is being cut from the department’s budget between 2014 and 2018. The AIVD has a budget of some €200m a year.

Parliament is due to debate the AIVD cutbacks on Wednesday.
