Wildcat returns to the Netherlands
A wildcat has been spotted roaming southern parts of Limburg, natural heritage organisation Natuurmonumenten said on Friday.
The wildcat (Felis Silvestris) disappeared from the Netherlands and the rest of Europe because of climate change and deforestation but has since moved back into hilly parts of Germany and the Ardennen region of Belgium.
A wildcat has now been caught on film several times scavanging from the corpse of a deer in Limburg. This is surprising because the animal is a hunter by nature, Naturmonumenten is quoted as saying by news agency ANP.
Wolves are also poised to make a come back in the Netherlands. Last month, Natuurmonumenten said a lone wolf was spotted near the German town of Meppen, which is just 15 kilometres from the Dutch border.
