State employs fewer civil servants and outside experts

National government reduced its workforce by 1.7% to 109,000 civil servants last year, housing minister Stef Blok told MPs on Monday.

Spending on external staff also fell by €10m compared with 2011. The government also reduced its bill for security, cars and office space by €200m.
In total, the cost of running the government apparatus fell from €13.4bn to €12.7bn, Blok said. More cuts in civil service numbers are on the cards this year.
