Dutch rower rescued in Indian Ocean

A Dutchman attempting to row from Australia to Africa has been rescued from the Indian Ocean after he was injured in a close call with a passing oil tanker, news agency AFP reported on Friday.

Ralph Tuijn, 36, was well into his 9,000 kilometre, 120-day journey when his boat was reportedly swamped in the middle of the night, AFP said.

Tuijn was forced to climb on top of the hull where he set off an emergency beacon, triggering a rescue mission.

Officials told AFP he is extremely lucky to be alive.
