60 arrests as Chelsea beat Benefica in Amsterdam

Amsterdam police arrested some 60 football fans before and after Wednesday night’s Europa League final, in which England’s Chelsea beat Benefica of Portugal 2-1 in injury time.

Most of the arrests were for illegal cards sales, drunken behaviour and vandalism, news agency ANP said.

Nevertheless the atmosphere was ‘party-like and good-humoured,’ police said.

At one point, a group made up of Ajax and Anderlecht supporters tried to stir up trouble with the Chelsea fans but were expelled from the city centre. The Belgian fans were deported, ANP said.

Three police officers were injured by flying glass and one was taken to hospital for treatment.
