40,000 sign condolence register for murdered brothers

Some 40,000 people have so far signed a virtual condolence register set up for the two brothers killed by their father and left in a ditch near the river Rhine.

Registers have also been opened in the town hall in Zeist, where the boys lived with their mother, and Wijk bij Duurstede, which is close to where the boys were found.

The bodies of the boys, aged seven and nine, were found on Sunday, nearly two weeks after they disappeared. Their father’s body was found in woods near Utrecht two weeks ago, prompting a massive hunt to find the children. He had committed suicide.

Police were forced to set up traffic controls to cope with sightseers along the narrow lane where the boys’ bodies were found.

Well-wishers have been leaving flowers at the spot since police completed their forensic examination of the ditch and drainage pipe.
