Members of 18 royal houses on investiture guest list

Representatives of 18 other royal houses are attending Tuesday’s investiture and many will take part in a farewell banquet hosted by queen Beatrix at the Rijksmuseum on Monday evening.

Among those expected at the Nieuwe Kerk on Tuesday are prince Charles from Britain, who also attended Beatrix’ investiture in 1980. He will be accompanied by his wife Camilla.

Japan’s crown prince Naruhito and crown prince Masako will also be at the ceremony along with princes and princesses from Europe and the Middle East.

Prince Albert of Monaco is breaking royal protocol by attending as a head of state. Traditionally, reigning monarchs do not attend coronations so as not to outshine the new king or queen.

Former UN secretary general Kofi Annan, European commission chief José Manuel Barroso and Jacques Rogge, head of the international Olympic committee, are also on the guest list.
