The pancake sector is booming despite the crisis

Traditional Dutch pancake houses are growing in popularity, particularly in tourist areas, according to research by hospitality industry advisors.

Van Spronsen & Partners says the number of pancake houses has gone up 6.9% over the last two years and now stands at 343 nationwide. Between 2008 and 2010 there was a minor dip.

The bureau says the cheaper eateries are benefiting from the economic crisis. ‘The fast food sector, which includes pancake houses, has attracted considerably more customers since 2010,’ the bureau said. ‘Consumers have become more aware of pricing and are careful about their spending.’

The bureau estimates 288,000 people visit a pancake house every week, spending an average of €11.50 each. This is only marginally up on the 2006 average spend of €10.30.

The Dutch eat pancakes with both sweet and savoury toppings. Bacon and maple syrup is a favourite.
