Hotel prices drop slightly

The price of a hotel room in the Netherlands fell by an average 2% to €121 in 2012, according to the hotel price index of booking site Hotels.com.

The main reason was a drop in business bookings from European countries, which were hit by the continuing euro crisis.

The fall would have been greater without a growing number of visitors from outside the eurozone. Visitors from the Scandinavian countries, the US and Asia profited from the favourable exchange rate.

There was also growth in the home market and from neighbouring countries, with people giving up their expensive holidays and opting for long weekend trips close to home, according to Hotels.com.

The most expensive hotel rooms remain those in Amsterdam, where an average room costs €132.
