Healthcare solidarity stops with smokers and the overweight

If cuts have to be made in healthcare provisions, 56% of the Dutch population think unhealthy lifestyles should be made to pay more, the Telegraaf reports on Wednesday.

Reducing the size of the basic health insurance package or increasing the own-risk element are both more unpopular options than increasing the cost of care for people who smoke or are obese, the poll states.

Some 35% of the people polled think heavy smokers should have to pay the entire cost of their treatment.

The full results will be presented later on Wednesday.
