Programme announced for change of monarch on April 30

The state information service RVD on Tuesday announced the programme for April 30, when queen Beatrix will abdicate and prince Willem-Alexander will become king.

The day will start at 10.00 with queen Beatrix signing the act of abdication in the Royal Palace on Amsterdam’s Dam square.

At approximately 10.30, the old queen and the new king will appear on the Palace balcony to address the crowds. They will be joined by princess Máxima and their daughters Amalia, Alexia and Ariane.

Just before 14.00 hours, king Willem-Alexander will walk the short distance from the Palace to the Nieuwe Kerk where he will take the oath of office. Members of both houses of parliament will then swear fealty to the new king – for which female members have been asked not to wear large hats because their faces must be clearly visible.

The day will end with a reception at the Palace.
