Education council calls for closure of hundreds of small schools

The education council is recommending the government close hundreds of primary schools because they have fewer than 100 pupils.

At the moment, the minimum number of pupils a school can have is 23. The council says the number of small schools should be cut back because they often provide poor quality education.

Closures are also necessary because of declining rural populations, the council says. In some places, the decline in the number of school age children will reach 20% between now and 2020, the council says.
