Dutch firms implicated in organic egg scandal

Monday 25 February 2013

Some 36 Dutch chicken farms are implicated in a German inquiry into fraud with organic eggs, the public prosecution department told broadcaster Nos on Monday.

German officials suspect hundreds of farms have been labelling eggs as organic even though they did not keep the chickens in organic conditions and kept too many birds in the same space.

The Dutch firms are suspected of supplying laying hens to the German firms using a double book-keeping system and fake bills. This allowed the German firms to show they did not have as many chickens on their farms as they actually did.

German officials have asked their Dutch colleagues for help with the investigation, Nos said.

Does anyone in this country tell the truth anymore, what happened to the trust? Every day another case of corruption and deceit. And people no longer hold the teachings of Christ in high esteem, it may explain the current state of affairs, and lack of values?

By Gabriel | 25 February 2013 4:26 PM

@Gabriel: "teachings of Christ"? What about the teachings of Buddha, Mohamed, Abraham, Moses and the Torah?... to name just a few.

By Quince | 25 February 2013 5:26 PM

Arghhhhhhh. No matter how hard you try to do the right thing by making responsible food choices, somebody's still out to get you. Are we going to get any more info about which farms are implicated? How do we know which, if any, brand of eggs in the supermarket are truly organic?

By Fussy easter | 25 February 2013 6:27 PM

First the beef, now the eggs. What next ?? Pork??

By Lincolonnnnnn Loggggssssssssss | 25 February 2013 6:37 PM

Did you really just say the Netherlands is corrupt and valueless because the Dutch no longer hold Christ in high esteem? You really said that?

By agentsuperdave | 25 February 2013 7:14 PM

@Gabriel: glad you put a question mark there: belief in any one of the thousands of gods has nothing to do with corruption, it has to do with your upbringing as a child @ people you associate with.

'Eggsactly what I thought all along.

I never go out of my way to buy organic as firstly, it's totally impossible to know for sure: second, inflated prices & third, to have totally organic food we would need another biosphere.

(Since the 90's, GMO pollen & seed has blown all over the planet. nutrition in food is far less now than 25 years ago.):P

^ To the guy up there,
Are you kidding me? Faith is the biggest lie in history, period. Please tell me how honest it is to kill those who do not believe 'in the name of our Lord', sexually abusing children, controlling the minds of people with fear and spreading lies about every single unexplained phenomenom throughout 'divine interpretations'. Church never brought any good except greatly slowing the evolution of mankind on a scientific level and making some people rich and powerful while bringing hate and divising the human race. And about the values thing, did you ever even read the Bible? It's full of disgusting things like slavery and anti-feminism.

Welcome to Europe. Everything is good according to indexes, everything is in order on paper and everybody is proud.
The truth is : full of hypocrisy & lies !
Europeans forgot everything while they are hysterically pointing their fingers at others...

Maybe because they are tired of paying too much tax (21% VAT), house bill, too much bureaucracy, too much government involved in everyday life, pension cut, cold weather and more and more, dont you think so?

@Gabriel, I feel the same way and ask the same questions.

I’m now wondering about the millions of chickens which were sent to destruction…in Asia.
Now with all those affairs it is highly probable that one part of those chicken were not destroyed but cleaned and process and sold at a low price by a group of people for the giants food industries….
Better to check this also…

It will now be easy to predict where the next 26 sudden chicken farm fires will happen ;) We are about overdue for the next one.

As a vegan, I live in constant fear of food giants passing off swede for turnip.

I feel the same Gabriel, and even though I'm not a Christian, I believe in the good values of that go along with that particular religious doctrine. Treating others as I would like to treated and the values represented in the ten comandments are just plain ordinary common sense to me. Sadly, I supported the organic food industry for many many years here, and now I do not feel like I can trust them anymore. So my support will end until the industry can prove that it has enough integrity. These are the consequences of lying. What comes around, always - always - goes around.

@David

What is interesting is that the country is going through a moral decline and at the same time it is also going through a financial decline. The question for the dismal science is, are moral and financial declines tied together in a large macro model? Which one takes place first? And, as there is no longer any religious influence in society at political or social level, how well would you say your secular/atheist society is performing. Divorce, and child abuse, is on the rise, neglect of the elderly we hear of daily, greed, selfishness, a sharp decline in morality and ethics, our children are being sexulized through the internet and media, and science has not rescued us yet?

This is why we have our own chickens! I know what they eat and how organic they really are.
