Shell drilling ship ‘not leaking oil’ after grounding off Alaska

There is no sign that a Shell drilling ship, which ran aground in a severe storm off the coast of Alaska, is leaking oil, news agencies reported on Wednesday.

The drilling ship Kulluk ran aground off a small uninhabited island during the storm on Monday. Once the weather permits, marine experts will board the ship to work out how it should be salvaged.
The Kulluk is carrying about 143,000 gallons (541,000 liters) of diesel and about 12,000 gallons (45,000 liters) of lube oil and hydraulic fluid, American media said.
Earlier this year, the Kulluk performed exploratory drilling in the Beaufort Sea for Shell, which has invested more than $4.5bn in its controversial efforts to drill for oil and gas in Alaska’s Arctic.
